New $13 Million Public Library Gets Green Light
December 8, 2008: The St. Thomas Regional Library and Records Center moves a crucial step closer to fruition. Under the direction of Governor John P. deJongh, Jr., the Public Finance Authority (PFA) of the Virgin Islands has given the green light to the Department of Public Works (DPNR) and Malbo Construction to begin work on the $13M project.
This latest article comes on the not-too-distant heels of earlier reports indicating that construction would begin in the fall of 2008; groundbreaking took place in September of 2006.
As longtime advocates of greater access to libraries throughout the territory, the Friends of St. Thomas Public Libraries continue with various year-'round programs that support literacy for all ages. With much gratitude to all involved, the Friends of St. Thomas Public Libraries (FOSTPL) also joins Gov. deJongh (as quoted in the following article) in thanks to former Executive Assistant DPNR Commissioner Claudette Lewis for her tireless efforts on behalf of the new library.
