The Friends of the St. Thomas Public Libraries, in conjunction with Dockside Bookshop, presented a "Read Across America" event on Friday, March 2 as part of the National Education Association (NEA)'s annual birthday tribute to the late Theodor Seuss Geisel, best known as "Dr. Seuss."
According to FOSTPL Board Member Cherrel Turner, “This is an event that I enjoyed putting on when I was in the states and just wanted to see the fun that could happen in St. Thomas”. A variety of storytellers (including students and adult professionals) were on hand to read to the almost one hundred children and adults in attendance, demonstrating that reading is for everyone to enjoy.
FOSTPL Board Member Eugenia Cruse got the children excited with her decorative hat and a lively reading of "The Lorax." Kevin Hughes from Choice Wireless had the children interact with him during his engaging rendition of "Green Eggs and Ham."
FOSTPL Board Member and program co-ordinator Cherrel Turner also had the children stand up to take the Readers’ Oath. This was a promise that they will continue to read. FOSTPL President Judy King-Edmeade, in her Dr. Seuss hat, got the children involved in activities such as Cat-tricks. She also informed everyone there about the importance of supporting our local bookstore, Dockside Bookshop.

The Friends of the St. Thomas Public Libraries in partnership with Dockside Bookshop, hosted a "Read Across America" program at the Dockside Bookshop on St. Thomas on the traditional date of this National Education Association (NEA) event, March 2, the birthday of Dr. Seuss.
According to FOSTPL President Judy King-Edmeade, the event was, in a word, "Fantabulous!"
FOSTPL Board member Cherrel Turner came up with the idea following discussions that took place at the Annual Meeting in January, and over weeks, that concept coalesced into participating in the annual NEA tribute to the late Theodor Seuss Geisel, best known as "Dr. Seuss."
From 3:30-5:30pm, FOSTPL members, Dockside Bookshop staff members, and Choice Communications LLC's Vice President of Sales & Promotions Kevin Hughes regaled Dr. Seuss fans both young and young at heart, with a variety of tales, including "The Lorax", which is now a major motion picture.
"The children were very enthusiastic," Edmeade continued. "I am sure there were close to 100 children and adults during the event. Dockside employees and especially (owner) Jonathan Gjessing -who had a big smile -- were pleased and thankful. I heard the register ringing constantly. Mr. Hughes from Choice was a big hit - especially with his giveaways. Eugenia was so lively and that hat made a hit too! Violeta Mack-Donovan, Eugenia Cruse, Bonnie Braga, Cynthia Richards, thanks for working and supporting the event. One young lady said she can't wait until next year… Get ready Cherrel!"
The gathering had a twofold function, as FOSTPL members, lamenting the continued delays in opening the new Tutu Library as well as the overall lack of sufficient library services in the territory, felt that local book stores need the support of our community now more than ever.
"Cynthia showed us a Dr. Suess poster from 1998. Perhaps it can be used at the next event. Several parents expressed how happy they were to be a part of the gathering and said that we should do a read every month!" The possibility of a book club is more than a notion for FOSTPL, and it is hoped that it will be hosted at Dockside Bookshop.
Photos will be coming soon!
The Friends of the St. Thomas Public Libraries would like to thank all who participated in the 2012 "Read Across America" at Dockside Bookshop. Special thanks are extended to the staff and management of the store, as well as Choice Communications.

(St. Thomas, VI -- February 21, 2012) -- On Friday, March 2, 2012, The Friends of the St. Thomas Public Libraries (FOSTPL) will commemorate "Read Across America Day" at the Dockside Bookshop at Havensight Mall on St. Thomas, from 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm with readings from the works of Dr. Seuss, whose birthday is honored on that date. Read Across America Day was instituted by the National Education Association (NEA) in 1998, as an annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for children to celebrate reading on March 2nd, the birthdate of beloved children's author Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss. [Download the flyer]
During the event, the public is invited to enjoy Dr. Seuss readings (including "The Lorax", coming to movie theaters in March 2012) and meet the staff of the Dockside Bookshop. In fact, FOSTPL urges the community to take advantage of the offerings found at local book stores. In addition to our libraries, where many great works are discovered, book stores provide the opportunity to have and hold a beloved biography, novel or instructional manual. As more and more adults seek to increase their skills and knowledge, local book stores are the perfect partners to school, university and public libraries.
During challenging economic times, the public votes with its dollars and time, for independent book sellers, according The American Booksellers Association (ABA) at www.bookweb.org . A December ABA press release states, "Independent bookstores are showing continued resilience this holiday season, as reported online and in-store sales are well up year-over-year… Member in-store book sales as tracked by Nielsen Bookscan for Thanksgiving week--which includes Black Friday and culminated in Small Business Saturday--increased 15.5% over the same week in 2010. Online sales in ABA member websites during that week increased 60% over a year ago."
