ENID M. BAA SUMMER READING PROGRAM (SRP)

Held annually: FOSTPL's Summer Reading Program (SRP) at the Enid M. Baa Public Library is an exciting summer program sponsored by the Friends of St. Thomas Public Libraries and the The Foundation for Enhanced Education to encourage St. Thomas youth to read and to develop a love for reading. This program has seen a 50% growth in the number of children completing it since its inception. OUR KIDS LIKE TO READ!!

FAQ (FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS)

Q. WHAT ARE THE GOALS OF THE Summer Reading Program?
A. The goals of the Summer Reading Program are:
1) To get as many children and adults reading a variety of books for the simple pleasure and the thrill of reading something interesting.
2) To build a love for reading and literature.
3) To promote literacy.
4) To give away thousands of dollars worth of book certificates to accomplished readers.

Q. HOW DOES THIS WONDERFUL PROGRAM WORK?
A. This annual program, sponsored by the Enid M. Baa Public Library, Friends of St. Thomas Public Libraries, and the The Foundation for Enhanced Education, is for children of all ages.

Each participant will receive a journal-workbook that must be returned by the deadline to be eligible for program prizes.

Participants may come in at their leisure to borrow and return books. Bonus points will be given for reading books on this year's theme.

Q. WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS FOR EACH AGE GROUP?

Ages 0 - 6 years Reading requirements for the Summer Program

Keep track of the number of pages you read or those that have been read to you. Complete the activities in the journal-workbook after each 30 minutes of reading. Record the name and author of each book read in the journal-workbook.

1st - 12th Reading requirements for the Summer Program

  • Grades 1 - 3 (rising to) 15 books 20 - 100 pages
  • Grades 4 - 6 (rising to) 12 books 40 - 200 pages
  • Grades 7 - 8 (rising to) 6 books 60 - 200 pages
  • Grades 9 - 12 (rising to) 5 books over 100 pages
Students must also complete and submit their journal-workbook to receive credit for their activities. All journal-work books are due by the deadline.

Registration for the Summer Reading Programs to be announced at the Enid M. Baa Public Library.

STUDENTS WHO COMPLETE ALL PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS WILL RECEIVE A $20 GIFT CERTIFICATE FOR DOCKSIDE BOOK SHOP AT THE AWARDS PARTY AND PROGRAM.

Q. What is the theme of this year's Summer Reading Program?
A. The theme for this summer's reading clinics is to be announced.

Q. Do I have to check books out of the Baa Libraries?
A. Yes, we want to encourage you to come in and use the Libraries, to get familiar with the available resources and materials at the Libraries, and to meet new friends who share your love of reading.

Q. What are the summer reading clinics?
A. The objective of these clinics is to reinforce the students' recognition of plot, setting, and character within text, and increase their ability to compare and contrast these elements between texts.

Q. When will the summer reading clinics be held?
A.

  • Grades 1st - 3rd: Dates to be announced.
  • Grades 4th - 6th: Dates to be announced.
  • Grades 7th - 8th: Dates to be announced.
  • Grades 9th - 12th: Dates to be announced.

Q. When is the Enid M. Baa Public Library open so that children may borrow their books?
A. The library is open from 9-5 Monday-Friday, and from 9-4 on Saturdays.
